David Hawley

Pattern and decoration are an essential part of David Hawley’s painting practice. Organic line work and rich patterns similar to those found in antique fabrics decadently spill over Hawley’s early canvas surfaces. The highly decorative compositions swirl and pulse with kaleidoscopic intensity.
Since completing a Masters degree at the Tasmanian School of Art, University of Tasmania in 2003, Hawley has taken his fascination with pattern further. Replacing canvas with plywood, Hawley’s screen prints derive from the distorted imagery created by repeated photocopy processes. The results are patterns jammed, skewed and reproduced.
Hawley’s work was included in the 2007 group exhibition Island to Island, Academy Gallery, Launceston, and touring to Malaysia and Hawai’i. He has also been included in the Burnie Print Prize, Burnie Regional Gallery, in 2008 and 2009, and Tidal, at the Devonport Regional Gallery in 2008. His solo exhibition, Something Else was held at CAST in Hobart and at the Dianne Tanzer Gallery in Melbourne in 2008.
