New Deities: The Cult of Celebrity opens 29 June 2007 at Devonport Regional Gallery
Curated by Catherine Wolfhagen, New Deities focuses on the work of eight Australian artists whose work addresses the cult of celebrity. The exhibition will explore the transformation of the ephemeral pop culture image to icon. Celebrities have come to represent the new deities of a modern society where celebrity worship is the new religion.
Artists include John Vella (TAS), Grant Stevens (QLD), Monika Tichacek (NSW) and Paul Wrigley (VIC).
