Sara Hughes | Te Manawa Art Gallery

Sara Hughes Flower House 2007
Sara Hughes new installation piece is now on show at the Te Manawa Art Gallery, in Palmerston North.
Entering the gallery you first come upon a large geometric stripped PVC curtain that you see through, to an inner wall of flowers. You pass through the PVC to be enclosed in a space of striped colour and a wall of 10,000 painted, paper cut flowers. The flowers are loosely layered and move slightly in the air flow of the room.
The flower imagery derives from the paisley motif that Sara spent much of 2003/04 researching and creating works with.
Te Manawa Art Gallery is a public gallery in Palmerston North - a city between Auckland and Wellington - and the exhibition is open until 15 July 2007. Alice Hutchinson is the curator.

Telecom Prospect 2007: New Art New Zealand - City Gallery Wellington
11 February to 29 April 2007
After 5 years Gregor Kregar finally wraps up the Matthew 12:12 project with a major exhibition of all elements of the work at City Gallery Wellington.
The project started with a live sheep installation for Sculpture on the Gulf in 2003, that later evolved into a video work, photographic portraits, badges and then ceramic installations of sheep in Auckland and Hobart.
This is the third Telecom Prospect exhibition, a curated show ‘drawing on the most vital and curious work made by New Zealand artists from the previous three years’. This years curator was Heather Galbraith, Senior Curator City Gallery Wellington.
The installation of live sheep was also displayed in front of the Christchurch Art Gallery (image above) as part of A&P Show last year.
Gregor is currently working on a large sculptural work commissioned for the Connells Bay sculpture park on Waiheke Island. We’ll have more details and images soon.

Tasmania: Explore the Possibilities
An Exhibition of Alternative Parliamentary Portraits by Jamin
March 2 - 24, 2007
Opening 6pm Friday March 2
Jamin’s new series of free-hand aerosol works explore the bizarre and often disturbing links between politics and business in Tasmania and questions whether or not the arts have a role to play in these issues. In a state where the Premier makes jokes like: “Tasmania: the Conspiracy State”, and business leaders like John Gay would like it noted that “it was Mr Lennon who had rushed to see him… not the other way around” - it is appropriate to be alert and alarmed.
