New York update from Anthony Lister

Hey hey,
Well New York is amazing! We are living in a beautiful little apartment in Williamsburg, which is a lot larger than we expected. I have been busy hanging out with friends and going to openings. I have recently moved into my new large painting studio in Brooklyn. Up until now I have been working out of my apartment which has been distracting to say the least, so it is so nice to be working in a large space again on the size canvas I have been wanting to work on.
My main objective while living in New York is to gain a better understanding of American culture, the people, the places, and see how it relates to my practice. While I am here I hope to be involved in as many projects as possible, gather new contacts and generally introduce myself to the American art scene. This year I have already been invited to be part of group shows in London, Seattle and LA.
I was involved with a project in January, which had me install a painting on a derelict building in Manhattan that was documented and featured on the cover of the arts section of the New York Times!
I have tried to update my site with what has been going on as much as possible. So if you scroll through the images in the new section, links are provided for recent interviews, projects, etc.
My New York show at Lyonswier Ortt Gallery went really well. The response was flattering and amazing. There is an interview from the show at the following address: http://www.myartspace.com/interviews/anthonylister/.
I am looking forward to returning to Australia for shows and being involved there as much as possible, so please keep me up to date with what’s happening.
Hope you are well and enjoying the weather, it is bitterly cold here.
Best,
Anthony Lister

Foxtel have commissioned six Melbourne street artists to put their skills to painting one of Melbourne’s trams as part of the Foxtel St Kilda Festival. Regan Tamanui (HA HA) was selected as one of these artists and his stenciled portraits feature on one end of the tram (see above). The artists were asked to draw inspiration from the festival for the collaborative piece. The tram is in usual operation during the festival so you’ll have to catch it on the move. And you can catch the making of it in this video below.
The Foxtel St Kilda Festival runs from 3 to 11 February 2007, see website for more details.

We Are Young & Free
1 February to 24 February 2007
Regan Tamanui is adept at viewing his adopted country with an objectivity that locals seem to ignore. He questions the voter-driven rise of the suburban celebrity and the dumping of organised religions in favour of sport, sex and get rich quick schemes. Where will this culture take us, and are we concerned? Our national anthem tells us we are young and free, but how far are we willing to take this freedom?
This is Tamanui’s third solo exhibition at Criterion and his 8th solo in six years. His work continues to develop and gain the attention of collectors from around the country.
